This program has been the foundation of Kamloops Hospice Association since 1981.  It offers a valuable service to clients in the community with a life threatening illness.

Following an initial assessment by the Program & Services Coordinator,  the support of a volunteer is offered to assist the client and their family in a comforting and confidential manner.

Volunteers who have been carefully screened and gone through a specialised training course, visit clients in their homes, long term care facility or in hospital to provide support and companionship for the terminally ill and respite for the caregivers. It enables the caregiver to spend some time away recharging their batteries or taking care of day to day affairs knowing their loved one is in safe competent care.

Volunteer training takes place in the Spring and Fall with the course limited to 12 participants. It is a 20 hour course held over two weekends and focuses on understanding the experience of death and dying, grief and loss, communication skills and the role of the volunteer in palliative care.
